When a caring adult gently encourages, reminds, and waits for children to complete their part of a routine, children rise to the challenge. Patiently, happily waiting for children to compete their routine task shows them that we believe they are capable. When caring adults start story time by showing their child a book and allowing them to explore the cover and the illustrations on the pages, children can develop more interest in the book and more in interest in cuddling in while reading. When caring adults tell their children specific ways in which they are grateful for their child, their child learns that they are loved. Being specific (ex. I appreciate the way you helped your sister find her coat) lets them know that this is not meaningless praise and helps build healthy relationships.
